Deep blue from a single mountain - the lapis of the royal tombs of Ur, scattered with pyrite the ancient world read as stars against a night sky. A rock, not a single mineral; no two beads alike. The blue that, ground to ultramarine, once cost more than gold.

One mountain in Afghanistan has supplied the world’s lapis for thousands of years - the blue of the royal tombs of Ur, and of ultramarine, the pigment once costlier than gold. Now strung at the wrist.

On the wrist it carries the blue of a single mountain, traded along some of the earliest routes on record. The gold flecks are pyrite, read across the ancient world as stars against a night sky; the white veining is calcite. Lapis is a rock, not a single mineral - the reason no two beads repeat, and the reason an evenly perfect blue is usually a dyed one.

Across cultures it was held as the stone of truth, wisdom, and the heavens - named here as what people believed. It asks more care than quartz: dry cloth only, kept from water and scent. A small asking for the blue that painters once paid more than gold to use.

Interior of the Maison Éthérique store: shelves of minerals along the walls and visitors at a long wooden table.

A contemporary house of ancient materials

Maison Éthérique brings together incense, aromatic resins, botanical bundles, crystals and the objects used with them. From our house in Dubai, we explore their aromas, stories and traditions - a collection for personal rituals, familiar favourites and gifts with meaning.

For the meaning it holds

A familiar aroma can become part of a daily ritual. A stone can be kept as a symbol of protection; a botanical chosen for a practice of purification. Across the collection, scent, beauty and personal meaning offer different reasons to choose.
