Aquamarine is the blue-green variety of beryl - Be₃Al₂Si₆O₁₈ - the same mineral species as emerald, coloured by traces of iron rather than emerald’s chromium. A true gemstone beryl, not a quartz: Mohs 7.5–8, the hardest material in this range and harder than every quartz in it.

The colour runs from a pale, almost watery sky-blue to a deeper teal, clearer and more transparent than most stones worn as beads. It grows in the cavities of granite pegmatites, sometimes in very large, flawless crystals.

Its name is its colour: from the Latin aqua marina, the water of the sea. Most aquamarine on the market is heat-treated to pure blue; finer untreated material keeps a green cast that collectors prize.

Is aquamarine related to emerald?
Yes - both are beryl, the same mineral species. Iron makes aquamarine blue; chromium makes emerald green. Aquamarine is the harder-wearing of the two for daily use.

Is the colour natural?
Aquamarine is commonly heat-treated to deepen the blue - a long-standing, stable practice. Untreated stones keep a slight green cast, which fine-stone collectors prefer. We confirm treatment per batch.
