Premium White Copal (Bursera Bipinnata) Mexico

Hand-tapped Bursera bipinnata from the highlands of Oaxaca, Mexico - the small twisted tree the Aztecs and Maya called copalli, "incense" itself. Pale white to light yellow tears, lighter and more volatile than frankincense, that release quickly and disappear into the charcoal cleanly. Harvested by Oaxacan copaleros in the cooler dry months when the resin sets most cleanly.

1. Light a charcoal disc until edges glow grey-white (30–45 seconds).
2. Place a single piece on the warm charcoal.
3. The piece softens, melts into the disc, and forms a dark charred layer as it burns.
4. Let the burner cool fully before clearing.

Burn in a ventilated room. Keep away from soft furnishings.

Copal is to the Americas what frankincense is to Arabia. Aztec temples burned it twice daily for over two centuries before Spanish contact - the Maya called it pom and burned it across the Yucatán under the same continuous practice. The Spanish wrote that the smell was the first thing they noticed entering Tenochtitlán.
