Black Copal from Peru is the rainforest cousin of Mexican copal - a different genus, Protium copal, with a deeper and slower character than the Bursera copals of the north. Andean and Amazonian cultures have burned it independently of Mesoamerica for centuries.
On charcoal the piece softens slowly, releasing earthy resin and sweet pine before deepening into amber and dry wood. Slower than White Copal, less linear than Hojari - the kind of session that asks for an hour, not a half-hour.
