A feldspar lit from inside - sunstone, spangled with plates of hematite that flash copper-gold as the wrist moves. Aventurescence, the lapidaries call it; the stone seems to carry its own light. Warm-toned, and different at every angle.

Sunstone - a feldspar spangled with hematite, flashing copper-gold as the wrist moves, as if the stone carried its own light. The glitter is mineral, aligned inside the crystal as it grew.

Aventurescence is the lapidary’s word for it - light striking thousands of metal-oxide plates that settled in parallel as the feldspar crystallised. Goldstone, the glittering man-made glass often sold as its substitute, is the imitation; this is the mineral the glass copies.

The medieval Icelandic texts name a sólarsteinn used to find the sun through overcast sky; scholars hold that stone was likely a clear calcite, and this feldspar inherited the name, not the navigation - honest naming, and a story worth wearing anyway. A feldspar like the amazonite here: spare it hard knocks.

Interior of the Maison Éthérique store: shelves of minerals along the walls and visitors at a long wooden table.

A contemporary house of ancient materials

Maison Éthérique brings together incense, aromatic resins, botanical bundles, crystals and the objects used with them. From our house in Dubai, we explore their aromas, stories and traditions - a collection for personal rituals, familiar favourites and gifts with meaning.

For the meaning it holds

A familiar aroma can become part of a daily ritual. A stone can be kept as a symbol of protection; a botanical chosen for a practice of purification. Across the collection, scent, beauty and personal meaning offer different reasons to choose.
