Incense Stick Holder – Shankh

Carved from a single piece of natural soapstone (steatite) - the soft talc-based metamorphic rock that has been the carver's stone of choice across South Asian, African, and East Asian craft tradition for thousands of years. The piece takes the form of a shankh: the Sanskrit name for the conch shell, specifically the large sea-shell of the genus Turbinella (also known as the Indian conch or chank shell) that has been used across South Asian craft and ritual tradition for centuries.

The conch's natural form is one of the more difficult shapes to translate into stone — the spiral chamber, the broad open mouth, the smooth gradient from one to the other. The soapstone carving captures the essential geometry of the shell without attempting precise mimicry; the form is recognisable as a conch while standing as its own sculptural object.

As an incense holder, the form provides a small recessed area for the stick to sit, with the broader carved surface catching the falling ash. The conch's compact scale makes the piece practical for daily use; the sculptural form makes it a small object of presence even between burning sessions.

1. Place the holder on a heat-safe surface.
2. Insert a stick incense into the holding point at a slight angle.
3. Light the tip, blow out the flame, allow to smoulder.
4. The ash collects on the carved soapstone surface as the stick burns through.
5. Allow to cool fully before cleaning.
6. Wipe with a soft dry cloth between sessions.

Soapstone is soft (~1 on the Mohs scale) - handle carefully to avoid scratching against harder surfaces. The stone darkens slightly with use as smoke residue settles into the porous surface - a natural patina rather than a stain. Avoid water and strong cleaning agents. Soft dry cloth only.
