Palo Santo Stick Burner - Air

Chulucanas pottery is a Peruvian ceramic tradition centred in the town of Chulucanas, in the Piura region of northern Peru. The technique descends from the Vicús and Tallán cultures of the pre-Columbian period (roughly 200 BCE to 600 CE) and was granted Denominación de Origen status by Peru's intellectual property authority in 2006 - the same regional-craft protection structure that covers Mysore Sandalwood in the Karnataka collection. The pottery uses a distinctive "negative resist" technique: mango leaves are pressed against the wet clay before a two-stage firing, masking portions of the surface and producing the characteristic dark-and-light patterning. Each piece is handcrafted by an individual artisan; no two are identical.

For sticks:

1. Hold the palo santo stick to a flame for 30–60 seconds until the tip catches.
2. Blow the flame out - the stick smoulders.
3. Lay the stick across the dish with the smouldering tip clear of the base.
4. The stick will self-extinguish - relight as needed.

For cones:

1. Place the cone upright on the dish surface.
2. Light the tip until the cone catches a flame.
3. Blow the flame out - the cone smoulders from the tip downward.
4. The cone burns through to its base.

Wipe with a soft, dry cloth after each use. Avoid prolonged moisture exposure. Always place on a heat-safe surface during use.

The Chulucanas pottery tradition is protected under Peru's Denominación de Origen system - the same legal structure that protects Mysore Sandalwood (Karnataka, India), Pisco (Peruvian grape spirit), and a small number of other regionally-specific craft products. The protection means only pottery made within the Chulucanas district, using the traditional two-stage firing technique, can carry the Chulucanas designation. The "negative resist" method - mango leaves pressed against wet clay before firing, leaving lighter unfired patches on the darker fired surface - is unique to this lineage; no other Peruvian or Andean ceramic style uses it.
