The material

The wood is aromatic only when the tree has died and aged three to four years on the forest floor - the resin saturates the heartwood slowly as the tree decomposes. Living Bursera graveolens produces no usable aroma; the chemistry develops only post-mortem. Peruvian regulation permits harvest only of naturally fallen, naturally aged wood; what reaches the workshop is the second stage of the tree's life, after the first has ended on its own terms. Ground fine, the powder releases its volatile fraction (limonene, α-terpineol, menthofuran) faster than a stick - better for short, intense sessions.

How to use

Light a charcoal disc until edges glow grey-white (30–45 seconds).
Sprinkle a small pinch of powder onto the warm charcoal.
Citric brightness opens within seconds; the sweet woody warmth follows.
Add more powder as needed - the burn is intense but short.
Let the burner cool fully before clearing.

Burn in a ventilated room. The powder format produces more smoke per gram than sticks - start with less than feels intuitive.

The Burseraceae family - the "incense family" of plants - contains roughly five hundred species across three genera that produce aromatic resins of commercial interest: Boswellia (frankincense), Commiphora (myrrh), and Bursera (copal and palo santo). The family diverged from its common ancestor more than fifty million years ago, before flowering plants reached the geographies they now inhabit - which is why genuinely related species produce strikingly similar resinous chemistry across Arabia, Africa, Mesoamerica, and the Andes.

Palo Santo Powder is Bursera graveolens in its fastest-burning form - ground heartwood from naturally aged Peruvian wood, packed for charcoal or burner use. The same botanical family as the Khaleeji frankincense and myrrh in the resin range; the South American branch of the Burseraceae.

On charcoal, the powder releases its volatile fraction within seconds - citric, resinous, deepening into a sweet woody warmth that holds for ten to fifteen minutes per pinch. Faster and more concentrated than a stick burn; better for short sessions or for layering with other resins on the same disc.
