Padma Incense Tibetan

Padma is the Sanskrit word for lotus (पद्म), used across Sanskrit-derived languages and loaned into Tibetan as pema (པདྨ་). The flower itself is a long-standing motif in the visual and material culture of the Indian Ocean trade region - from the carved capitals of South Indian stonework to Himalayan textiles and household ritual objects. The name here designates the workshop's lotus-led blend, not a claim about the buyer.

The recipe. Lotus root (the rhizome of Nelumbo nucifera, ground and dried) carries a soft, slightly powdery, faintly sweet character. The wild Himalayan herbs are the workshop's confidential blend; the sandalwood is the structural woody base; the dried flower petals add the upper register of soft floral lift. The result is the gentlest of the three blends in this cluster - quiet, low, undemonstrative.

The workshop and the place. Made in Karnataka, India by makers from the Tibetan craft community established at Bylakuppe, Mundgod, and Hunsur - settlements founded in the 1960s and 1970s in the Mysore region of Karnataka after the Tibetan diaspora, now home to several generations of craftspeople producing traditional Tibetan-tradition handwork including incense, woven textiles, and metalwork. The recipe and rolling technique are carried from Tibetan tradition; the materials and the place are Indian.

The form. Bamboo-less sticks: the workshop binds the ground aromatic material with a plant-based natural binder rather than rolling it around a bamboo splint. The advantage is that the entire stick is the scent - there is no bamboo combustion contributing a smoky undertone. The technical method is shared with the Kathmandu Stupa range, though the workshop, tradition, and place are different.

Character on the burn. Opens with the powdery quietness of the lotus and floral petals. The middle minutes settle into the sandalwood base. The close is a soft herbal residue - gentle, low-volume, suited to small rooms and slow evenings.

1. Take a stick from the tube.
2. Hold the tip to a flame for 5–10 seconds until it catches.
3. Blow out the flame - the stick smoulders.
4. Place the stick in the included green serpentine holder on a heat-safe surface.
5. The stick burns for approximately 30 minutes before reaching the end.
6. Allow the holder to cool completely before handling.

Burn in a well-ventilated room. The bamboo-less stick is slightly more fragile than a bamboo-cored stick; handle gently to avoid breakage. Store the tube in a cool, dry place to preserve the natural aromatic profile.

Lotus root in incense is uncommon - the rhizome is more often a culinary or medicinal ingredient in East and Southeast Asian cooking. Including it as a primary scent material gives Padma a distinct character against the more typical sandalwood-and-resin blends: lower in volume, softer in profile, with a faint powdery sweetness that the dried flower petals reinforce. Lotus iconography appears across South Asian and Himalayan visual culture spanning several thousand years - the flower has been deployed in stonework, textiles, and household objects across many cultural traditions of the wider Indian Ocean region.

The green stone holder is sold across the incense trade as "jade." In standard mineralogical terms, most of the inexpensive green-stone holders in this category are serpentine - a soft, polishable silicate that takes the same green colouring but is mineralogically distinct from true jade (jadeite or nephrite). The brand's house practice is to disclose the trade-name distinction.
