Floral Incense Holder-Multi Colored

Soapstone - also called steatite in the mineralogical literature - is a metamorphic rock composed primarily of the mineral talc. It is one of the softest stones in widespread use (rating about 1 on the Mohs hardness scale) which makes it exceptionally easy to carve by hand, while being dense enough to hold a carved form indefinitely and resistant enough to heat to function as an incense base. The stone has been used for carved decorative and household objects across India, Pakistan, Brazil, China, and the wider Asian and African craft regions for thousands of years.

The multi-coloured variation in this piece - the soft pinkish base with light grey and beige veining - comes from the natural impurities and mineral inclusions in the steatite as it formed. Each piece carries its own pattern; no two are identical. The carver works with the natural colouration rather than against it, letting the stone's variation become part of the finished form.

The floral-inspired shape is carved freehand - the form references a flower without precisely depicting any single species. The smooth surface is finished by hand-rubbing rather than mechanical polishing, which gives the piece its characteristic soft tactile quality.

1. Place the holder on a heat-safe surface.
2. Insert a stick incense into the holding point at a slight angle.
3. Light the tip, blow out the flame, allow to smoulder.
4. The ash collects on the carved surface as the stick burns.
5. Allow to cool before cleaning.
6. Wipe with a soft dry cloth between sessions.

The combination of softness (easy to carve), density (holds the form), and heat resistance (does not crack from thermal stress) makes it uniquely suited to small-scale carving and to objects intended for use near heat sources.
