Amazonite - the rare blue-green of the feldspar family, cut by ancient Egypt into beads and amulets, where green stood for things returning. Pale aqua to deep teal under a fine white grid, with a faint sheen across the polished beads.

To ancient Egypt, green was the colour of things returning, and green stones like amazonite were cut into beads and amulets to carry it. A rare blue-green feldspar, gridded with fine white, worn at the wrist.

The colour is the reason to want it - pale aqua to deep teal, the rare colour of Earth’s most common mineral family, crossed by a white grid that is the stone’s own structure rather than a flaw. Honestly named: a feldspar, not a quartz, slightly softer, with a faint sheen across the polished beads that quartz does not give.

The name is the range’s best story - amazonite has never been found in the Amazon; an eighteenth-century label attached to the wrong stone and was never corrected. Worked since antiquity, from Egypt to the pre-Columbian Andes. What the green has meant to the peoples who carried it is theirs, and now yours.
